Nigerian lawmaker, Oloye Akin Alabi, has shared his opinion on President Buhariʼs approval of the Oronsaye Report on Rationalisation and Restructuring of Nigeria government Parastatals, Commissions and Agencies.
The lawmaker representing Egbeda/Ona-Ara federal constituency in Oyo state, has suggested the halt of all bills on creation of new agencies and institutions.
He said: “As a lawmaker, my first advice will be to halt all bills creating new agencies and institutions. Everyday, lawmakers sponsor bills to establish institutions in their constituencies and senatorial districts. And I don’t blame them.
“Lawmakers are pressured at home to “bring” schools and institutions to their constituencies. That is what they can point to decades later when people ask you what you did while you were there.
“Your constituents do not care whether you sponsored a bill, for example, to make businesses pay zero tax in the first two years or a bill on the NYSC act or any national issue. No one cares. They want you to bring college of education and so on. And we know once it passes into law, recruiting starts, office rents starts, officially cars training, permanent office.
“The must be catered for in the appropriate act (budget). That is a major cause of rise in government expenses. So scrapping some agencies and merging some is welcome by me. I will be participating fully in the process of amending these acts and obviously repealing some. There will be a lot of resistance. Even from the public but we have to get it done,” Alabi said. The Pace News
