Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU; Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU and those of the Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU on Monday shut down the main campus of the Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo over the inability of the Lagos State government to pay them the N30,000 monthly minimum wage.

This shut down denied the Vice Chancellor, Prof Olanrewaju Fagbohun, SAN, workers and the students entry into the institution premises, who were hoping to resume normal academic activities after closure for months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The workers failed to accept the plead of the Vice Chancellor.

According to report reaching TPN, the protest was as a result of the failure to fulfill the promise made by the Lagos State Government on increment in salaries.

It was also gathered that the promise has been made over a year ago.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced September 14 as the resumption date for tertiary institutions.

The Aviation unions has shut down Arik Air operations over alleged failure to pay seven months’ salary arrears of workers and other anti-labour practice.

The reason behind failure for the airline to pay the workers arrears salary is yet to be known.

Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has pledged to provide technical support to Kogi State, in its efforts to establish a robust waste management system in the state.

The agency Managing Director/CEO, Ibrahim Odumboni, gave the assurance while receiving the Kogi State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Victor Adewale Omofaiye and his team, who came on a fact-finding visit to LAWMA and its waste management facilities.

Odumboni expressed LAWMA’s readiness to support efforts of Kogi State to set up a proper waste management structure in the state, for positive impact on the environment, the people and visitors.

The LAWMA boss noted that the visit offered an opportunity for them to witness the waste management processes and innovative ideas being adopted by the Authority, to tackle day-to-day challenges of waste management in the state.

He further informed the visiting team that the Authority would soon launch an educational initiative called “LAWMA Academy”, with the sole purpose of imparting waste management knowledge to the younger generation, advising the visitors to explore the idea of setting up recycling clubs in schools and similar programs, to lay a solid foundation for waste management in their state.

Also speaking, the Kogi State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Victor Adewale Omofaiye, thanked the Authority for a warm reception, noting that the purpose of their visit was to tap into LAWMA’s vast experience, which had made it a global brand.

Hon. Omafaiye noted that the environment was a gift from God, which required collective preservation, adding that the level of achievement attained by Lagos State in environmental sustainability did not just happen overnight, hence their visit to discover the secrets.

While addressing the team, the Chief Technical Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Olohunwa Tijani, listed generation, collection and disposal as the key components of waste management process in any geographical location, stressing that proper management of those components were essential to having an effective waste management system.

He added that, to achieve their goal of a cleaner and healthier state, the waste management system should be purpose-driven and devoid of political interference.

LAWMA’s Assistant General Manager, Waste Management Development, Dr. Essien Nsuabia, spoke on waste minimization techniques, highlighting the importance of studying human activities in a particular geographical location, for the formation of effective waste management plans and policies. He shared his experience as part of the LAWMA team sent to Sierra Leone, to help establish a solid waste structure for the country.

The team, in the course of their visit, embarked on a tour of some of the Authority’s facilities such as the engineering section, where LAWMA engineers fabricate double dino bins for waste containerization, Olusosun dumpsite, and others, for first-hand assessment.
