Atiku Applauds Senator Natasha’s Court Victory, Hails Ruling as Win for Democracy

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has commended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for successfully challenging her suspension from the Senate, describing the legal victory as a bold affirmation of democratic rights and the rule of law.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, had filed a lawsuit against the Senate following her six-month suspension over allegations of gross misconduct.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Binta Nyako, ruled on Friday that the suspension was excessive and unconstitutional, noting that it effectively denied the lawmaker’s constituents their right to representation.

Reacting to the court’s decision in a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Atiku hailed the courage shown by the senator in seeking redress.

He said her action was especially significant in a legislative environment where female lawmakers often face additional challenges.

“I also hail Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan for challenging the illegality of her suspension by not sleeping on her rights in a chamber where women are already vulnerable. There’s no price that is too great in asserting one’s rights,” Atiku said.

The former Vice President also praised Justice Nyako for what he called a “courageous and principled” judgment that upheld democratic norms.

He referred to the Senate’s suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan as “obnoxious” and out of step with the values of fairness and justice.

Atiku’s comments come amid broader debates about legislative overreach and the importance of judicial checks in Nigeria’s democratic framework.
