Peter Obi Reaffirms 2027 Presidential Bid, Promises Four-Year Tenure to Deliver Good Governance

Former Labour Party presidential candidate insists coalition with ADC is not anti-party

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has confirmed he will run for president again in 2027, stating that four years is enough for him to deliver meaningful change and set Nigeria on the path to good governance.

Speaking on Sunday Politics, a programme aired on Channels Television, Obi said his commitment to serve for a single term stems from a belief that impactful leadership does not require a prolonged stay in office.

“I don’t need a day more than four years. I will show the direction of good governance,” he said. “In two years, there has been maximum damage. Two years can change it in a good direction. People want to get up and see a president that cares, that shows compassion.”

Obi, who governed Anambra State from 2006 to 2014, said he is fully qualified to lead the country and is not swayed by any political permutations regarding his candidacy.

“Nobody has ever discussed with me whether to be A or B or C,” he said. “I am going to contest for the President of Nigeria, and I believe I’m qualified.”

The LP stalwart also addressed the recent coalition of opposition figures under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), clarifying that his involvement does not amount to disloyalty to the Labour Party.

“There is nothing anti-party in the decision,” Obi explained. “We are not abandoning where we are. We are going there together. What is constant is that we have agreed to work together.”

The emerging coalition [which includes influential politicians from multiple parties] is expected to present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election.
