Lagos Government Seals Purple Mall After Fatal Parking Lot Collapse

Lagos State Government has sealed the Purple Mall in Lekki indefinitely following the tragic collapse of a section of its parking lot that led to the death of a young Nigerian on Wednesday.

The incident has prompted swift action from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, which also announced the launch of a detailed investigation into the cause of the collapse.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Kunle Adeshina, and signed by the Commissioner, Tokunbo Wahab, a specialised team has been constituted to determine the root cause of the structural failure. The team will also review the mall’s adherence to building safety regulations and assess any environmental or structural violations that may have contributed to the incident.

“This heartbreaking accident was entirely preventable,” Wahab said. “We will ensure full accountability and implement all necessary measures to prevent future occurrences.”

The Commissioner extended his condolences to the victim’s family and emphasized the government’s commitment to public safety.

“Lagosians deserve safe public spaces, and we will not compromise on this,” he added.

Wahab assured residents that the government will provide updates as the investigation progresses, reiterating that those found culpable will face appropriate sanctions.

The sealing of the Purple Mall underscores the government’s stance on building integrity and environmental safety in commercial spaces across the state.
